My brother Richard and his family are living and working in China. They are based near Datong, the second city in Shanxi Province. Datong is an industrial city, based on coal mining and locomotive production. It was here that the last steam trains stopped production only in 1989. They hope to visit the steam museum there soon, but have already seen a few steam trains working on the lines around Taiyuan and Shuozhou. "They are particularly impressive early in the morning when belching huge amounts of steam on the approach to the mountains."
There are local markets where fresh seasonal produce is
available. In this picture it looks like potatoes for tea!
